Welcome to Tottori, where the stunning Tottori Sand Dunes and the intriguing Sand Dunes Museum await you. This short guide will take you through a delightful day, starting from Tottori Station and exploring the wonders of this unique destination.
Access from Tottori Station
We began our journey at Tottori Station, where we secured tickets for the Sand Museum with a delightful 200 Yen discount. Boarding the regular bus number 39 at 09.40h, we enjoyed a scenic 35-minute ride to the Tottori Sand Museum, where our tour began. You can also take the Sightseeing Loop Bus Nr. 09 called ‘Kirinjishi’ in order to get to the Sand Dunes / Sand Museum.
Sand Dunes Museum – An Egyptian Odyssey
Upon our arrival, our initial stop was the Sand Dunes Museum. The featured exhibition theme highlighted the allure of ‘Egypt’, presenting remarkable sand sculptures crafted by various artists. The museum changes its themes every year, embracing the idea of “Travel around the World in Sand.” As each exhibition period comes to an end, the sand sculptures return to their original state of sand. While visiting, relish the exceptional opportunity to observe these temporary art pieces, acknowledging that this encounter is truly a one-of-a-kind experience.
Miharashi Hill – Dune Center and Lunch
Let’s move on to Miharashi Hill, the Dune Center, where we had a delicious lunch stop. It is a delightful spot, hosting a souvenir shop and a cozy food court. Don’t forget take your time exploring the unique souvenirs and local crafts, truly capturing the essence of Tottori.
Chairlift Adventure to the Sand Dunes
I strongly suggest taking the chairlift to the Sand Dunes, conveniently located right next to the Miharashi Dune Center. The brief ride is not only enjoyable but also a lot of fun! This experience was particularly perfect for us, with the added bonus of wonderful weather and a touch of fresh air. This simple pleasure became a lasting memory on our journey.
Enjoying the Dunes – Sun, Sand, and Serenity
Arriving at the entry point of the Tottori Sand Dunes, I took a walk across the sandy landscape. It was quite windy, however, the temperature was ideal for a leisurely walk. Remember to apply sunscreen! I learned my lesson the hard way with a sunburn on my neck, underestimating the strength of the sun… lol. In the end, we enjoyed a coffee break at Takahama Café and explored the souvenir shops to complete our visit to the Tottori Sand Dunes.
