Last weekend, we spent an unforgettable day in the Swiss mountains – and honestly, it was exactly what we needed! While the valley below was covered in fog and darkness, we enjoyed bright sunshine above the clouds. We had actually gifted a sledging experience to a friend for his birthday years ago, but somehow we never managed to go. This year, we finally wanted to make it happen. However, due to the lack of snow this winter (yes, Switzerland had surprisingly little snow this year), we discovered a unique and creative alternative: Fondue on a Sledge!

A Unique Swiss Experience
Instead of traditional sledging, we enjoyed a delicious fondue outdoors with a breathtaking mountain view. The idea alone is brilliant – eating traditional Swiss cheese fondue outside, surrounded by alpine scenery, with fresh mountain air and sunshine. The sledge is designed for sitting only rather than sliding downhill, but that did not take away from the experience at all.

Getting There: Fürenalp, Engelberg
We met at the cable car station shortly before 11am. The cable car runs every 20 minutes, which makes planning very easy. From there, we took the cable car one stop up towards Fürenalp Engelberg, where a mountain restaurant offers this special fondue sledge experience (reservation required). After arriving, we walked a few meters uphill to find a quiet spot with a nice view. It felt like a mountain picnic: simple, peaceful and incredibly scenic.

Overall Experience
The price was very fair, especially considering the quality of the food and the unique setting. The fondue tasted amazing – creamy, flavorful and exactly what you would expect from a traditional Swiss cheese fondue. What made it even better was how easy and relaxed everything was. No complicated planning, no extreme activity – just good food, good company and stunning mountain views.
